If it was a war film, then John Wayne—a giant of the genre—was usually in uniform. If The Force were a film, it is easy to see Duke playing any one of the elite American soldiers or their Canadian counterparts (mountainmen and lumberjacks included) who were assembled, then assigned, to take a significant and frightfully steep Nazi stronghold relying on the survival skills, mission-specific training, and hard-earned brotherhood it took to navigate the hostile terrain. Ironically, the unit’s extensive capabilities made them a model for another group that John Wayne knew well—the Green Berets.
